Green broadband

Both Eclipse Internet and BSkyB have announced they are carbon neutral - Eclipse this year, and BSkyB in 2006.

If it's important to you that your broadband provider is taking climate change and carbon emissions seriously, then check out my blog post on www.ukbroadbandfinder.com which goes into more detail about what BSkyB and Eclipse have done to reduce emissions and offset emissions that they can't eliminate entirely.

View Eclipse Internet's residential and business broadband deals, and Sky's packages (or create your own Sky bundle).

Telecoms provider BT is also committing itself to carbon emissions reductions. And it is working on influencing and engaging with customers, suppliers and employees to produce lower-carbon solutions and reduce personal and business carbon emissions.

Broadband bundles

Ofcom's Digital Progress Report, published yesterday, included the statistic that at the end of 2006, over 40% of all adults with broadband available at home took other communications services from the same provider. For many users, the ability to bundle was the most important factor when choosing a broadband provider - 27%, the same percentage who saw price as the most important factor in their choice.

Bundles typically include broadband and phone, though increasingly there are bundles of three (broadband, phone and TV; broadband, mobile and TV; or other combinations) although Virgin Media is now offering quadplay - broadband, TV, phone and mobile.

Some communications providers are now including broadband in a bundle for no extra charge - for example, Sky and TalkTalk.

Virgin Media may buy Pipex

The Telegraph has reported that Virgin Media is emerging as an unexpected frontrunner to buy Pipex.

Pipex, which offers home and business broadband and broadband/phone bundles, is up for sale at £335 million. The Telegraph also said that BT Group is thought to be interested.

Pipex is an LLU, or local loop unbundler - meaning it has got its own equipment in exchanges. This means that it can provide faster broadband and eventually TV and other services.

From Virgin Media's point of view, ownership of Pipex would immediately provide a way of getting Virgin Media TV, broadband and phone combinations into many more homes. Cable broadband is unavailable in many areas of the UK (particularly rural and semi rural areas) which has cut off a large potential market. (Although you can get broadband via ADSL from Virgin - thanks to what was Virgin Net - the attractive Virgin Media bundles, including their much-heralded 4 for £40 bundle, are currently delivered via cable).

Watching TV at the moment, it seems as if every other advert is for Sky or Virgin Media as they battle it out to be the bundle provider of choice, with Sky offering broadband, TV and phone for £26 a month (plus line rental to BT), and Virgin Media offering a range of bundles including their famous 3 for £30 broadband, phone and TV package.

If you can't wait for the outcome of the "who buys Pipex?" saga then check out the bundles page on my UK broadband comparison website now.

Of course what this means for The Hoff, who knows...

Virgin Media launches

Virgin Media - created from NTL, Telewest and Virgin - has now launched in the UK.

The new tagline is Watch it, Surf it, Talk it, Walk it so expect to see/hear that on a billboard, TV or radio station near you soon... along with some very cool adverts starring Uma Thurman.

And if you though the new Sky offer of broadband, TV and phone was a great deal at £26 per month, wait til you see Virgin Media's £40 a month bundle - broadband, TV, phone, mobile.

Virgin Media is offering:
  • Broadband: blisteringly fast broadband. Unlimited downloads.
  • TV: Crystal clear TV - plus 500 films at your beck and call.
  • Phone: Flexible plan. Fair pricing. No phoney baloney.
  • Mobile: a different kind of mobile service that's flexible and fun.

In a selection of packages so there's sure to be one that suits you.

Virgin Media and more

Last year it was announced that the new Telewest, NTL and Virgin company would be branded as Virgin Media. The new company is soon to launch its products - heralding a year of fantastic entertainment and communications consumer offers from a range of companies.

Virgin Media will offer what they call a quadplay - of digital TV, broadband, mobile phone and home phone. For NTL / Telewest / Virgin this is a chance to put behind them the years of cable mergers and move forward with bundled entertainment and communications packages that benefit from the customer service Virgin is renowned for. Keep an eye out for the Virgin Media launch.

Companies are increasingly bundling together entertainment and communications products as it helps them attract new customers (one bill at a great price) and retain existing ones (especially as there are now so many excellent standalone deals around - BT broadband for £9.95 a month, anyone?).

Sky has got in quick with its new See, Surf, Speak bundle - over 100 digital TV channels, UP TO 8Mb broadband and free UK evening and weekend landline calls. All this for just £26 a month, plus a one-off broadband activation fee of £20 (plus £11 per month to BT for your line rental.) Find out more about SKY here.

Another broadband company soon to be offering TV is Tiscali as part of its triple play offering. One of the UK's largest broadband providers, Tiscali bought TV/video on demand/broadband/phone provider Homechoice last year and will be offering a TV service more widely in the next few months (it is currently offering it to a select group of customers only). Homechoice has only been available in parts of London and Stevenage but Tiscali TV should be available much more widely when it launches. Tiscali TV isn't available yet but you can check out current Tiscali broadband and broadband-and-phone bundles here on my broadband comparision website www.ukbroadbandfinder.com.

New Sky broadband, TV and phone offer

Sky Digital has launched a new bundle package made up of Sky broadband, Sky TV and Sky Talk for only £26 a month (subject to availability in your area), plus a one-off broadband activation fee of £20 (plus £11 per month to BT for your line rental.)

The bundle includes all six Sky TV entertainment mixes. There's Sky Broadband with up to 8Mb download speeds and a monthly usage allowance of 40GB. And you get a free wireless Sky router. Sky Talk Freetime is also included which has FREE evening and weekend calls to UK landlines (you still pay BT for your line rental and Sky for any other calls you make).

This particular £26 bundle is only available to 70% of the UK population, and there are of course other terms and conditions, so find out more about this See, Surf and Speak offer here.

It's a great deal - but like any bundle offer, make sure you work out whether you need / want the different elements of this package, because if not there may well be single products or a two-product bundle more suitable for you. You can check out a range of broadband packages and broadband / phone packages (or the NTL and Telewest broadband, phone and cable TV bundles) on my site www.ukbroadbandfinder.com. Try the broadband availability checker to find out what is available in your area, or browse bundles at www.ukbroadbandfinder.com/bundles.html.
