Virgin Media inroduces 50Mb broadband

It's here - 50Mb broadband from Virgin Media.

This new Size XXL 50Mb Broadband package from Virgin Media costs £35 a month if you also take a Virgin Media phone line (starting at 311 a month), or £51 a month for standalone superfast broadband.

not everyone can get this new broadband package now - it is rolling out across the Virgin Media network between now and Summer 2009.

Already around 1.3 million homes in parts of Scotland, the Midlands and South London can get 50Mb broadband from Virgin Media. The rest of the 12.6 million UK homes covered by Virgin Media's fibre optic network will be ready for 50Mb by summer 2009.

Virgin Media, the cable broadband provider, is still offering cable Size M broadband up to 2Mbps for only £4.50 a month when you take a phone package too (which start at only £11 a month).

Just want Size M broadband-only ? The same up to 2Mbps cable broadband deal is only £10 a month for 6 months (then £18 a month).

Broadband speeds may be a lot slower in the UK than in other parts of the world but some broaband providers here have upgraded their equipment enough to be able to offer broadband speeds of up to a superfast 24Mb.

More superfast broadband packages

More broadband providers are starting to offer superfast broadband deals (10 meg and above). Check some of them out below.

Virgin broadband via Cable Size: XL, up to 10 meg, now only £29 per month for 12 months. Offer ends 30/06/07.

Up to 16 meg. Sign up for a Sky bundle and if you select the MAX broadband option you can get up to 16 meg. Package prices vary.

Unlimited Broadband from UK Online for only £24.99 per month. With 22Mb there's no limit to what you can do online.

With Be Broadband you could get up to 24Mb download speed for only £14 to £24 a month! Be Unlimited, Be Lite, and Be Pro.

Make sure you check broadband availability in your area as these superfast packages may not be available to everyone. Then filter your results by speed to find which are the fastest packages.

20 meg broadband for 29 pounds a month

Virgin Media's new offer saving £8 a month on cable broadband packages for a year means that if your area can receive their new superfast up to 20 meg broadband you can sign up to it for only £29 per month for the first 12 months. The £8-a-month discount is available if you sign up before 30/09/07. (After 12 months, the price reverts to the standard XL broadband price of £37 per month.)

They're upgrading users to the faster broadband speeds area by area from summer onwards. View the roll-out plan here. (The plan will be updated through the summer).

Anyone on their XL cable broadband broadband package will enjoy a free upgrade to the new 20 meg service once it is available in their area so you can still sign up to that and receive up to 10 meg for only £29 per month for 12 months if you want to take advantage of the special offer. (A few areas may only get up to 16 meg initially).

If you can't yet get up to 20 meg from Virgin Media and you just can't wait, check out the up to 24 meg broadband packages Be Lite for only £14 a month or Be Unlimited for only £24 per month (with free connection, saving £24, if you sign up before 31/05/07). Bigger download allowance with Be Lite

Superfast broadband provider Be has increased the download limit on its Be Lite package.

Previously the broadband package only included 1 Gig download limit - but this has now been increased to a 4 Gig download allowance. A heavy downloader can then buy another 5 Gigs for £5. As Be Lite is only £14 a month (plus a £24 connection fee) this makes a robust, superfast broadband package that is really affordable. And the upload speed is still up to 0.4 Meg.

Check out Be Lite now - or if you need an unlimited package, view Be Unlimited (only £24 a month) or Be Pro for businesses (only £40 per month). And don't forget, Be are waiving the £24 connection fee for Be Lite, Be Unlimited and Be Pro (offer ends 31/05/07).

Superfast broadband

If 8 Meg isn't fast enough for you, there are now broadband providers offering up to 24 Meg for home broadband connections.

Okay, in other countries they may be enjoying speeds like this as a matter of course, but as it isn't that long since a 512k download speed was the height of online sophistication in the UK we can still allow ourselves to get a little excited by genuinely superfast broadband.

Of course, the usual proviso applies - speeds are "up to" and not guaranteed.

The fastest speeds are available from broadband providers who use their own networks, whether phone line or cable.

The best known superfast broadband provider is probably Be. They have been expanding their network coverage significantly from London-only to include many areas of the UK. You can click here to find out if your local exchange has been enabled for Be broadband. Be broadband prices are very low for the speed - only £14 a month for their Be Lite package.

Cable provider Virgin Media is offering up to 10 Mb on its cable broadband package XL for £35 a month - and you get a one-off discount of £10 if you order online.

UK Online uses its own network for its up to 22 Meg broadband service. There's an offer at the moment too - order before 30/04/07 and get the service for only £24.99 per month for the first year (usual price is £29.99 per month). And they are currently waiving the £25 connection fee for this package.
